The following film review was posted in an edition of the Essex Enquirer as part of Festival Film Club.I went into this film with an open mind as sci-fi films usually require a lot of your attention to keep up with the snazzy lingo and impressive technology. Following the storyline of a police robot called Chappie who is stolen and trained into a 'gangster' to help three criminals get out of money trouble. As the film progressed I wasn't sure whether I was for or against main robot Chappie. The story line kept you on your toes with all of the characters being baddies at some points and goodies at others which captivated my attention for a while. Dev Patel's acting can be credited here as he gave a decent portrayal of maker of Chappie: Deon, where as Hugh Jackman seemed to have a bit of an irrelevant role for someone of his acting talent. The special effects were impressive, however the story line became not so much. It became too unrealistic, which is normally fine for a sci-fi film but left me feeling rather baffled by the end of it. They slightly over stepped the line when it came to being creative with new technology and the constant gun battles (although unique for a film of this genre) became a little annoying. However, something averagely interesting to see if you're into watching a bit of Hugh Jackman with a mullet and a cute yet devilish robot called Chappie.
